Jonathan Bryce Q&A

What was your biggest news story?

I covered the launch of the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale - one of our biggest stories both in its build up and when it actually launched. From the event in Italy, I was able to prize a news scoop from the mouths of multiple executives, giving rise to our exclusive story on Alfa Romeo's successor to the 4C. I loved writing it, but I love looking at the render of the car even more.

What’s the best car you’ve ever driven?

I’ve been fortunate enough to have a go in cars worth more than my left lung, but I owned a Volkswagen Up GTI for what turned out to be the best year of my motoring life. It was slow, snub-nosed and stupid - but so was the family’s bearded collie. And how can I not love him?

What will the car industry look like in 20 years?

Electric cars will get better and better. They might only make artificial noise, but engineers will find other ways of exploiting character. Whether that comes from a short-action manual gearbox or an interchangeable dashboard, EVs are here to stay. Before they’re replaced by hydrogen 20 years after that.
